Who We AreThe Virginia Chapter of the American College of Nurse-Midwives (VA ACNM) is a dynamic professional organization whose primary goal is to assist Virginia Certified Nurse-Midwives and student nurse midwives in the delivery of quality, accessible, and affordable health care to Virginia women and their families. The Virginia ACNM is focused on increasing public awareness of the outstanding quality of care and patient outcomes that are associated with care provided by Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNM's). Through monitoring and sponsoring Virginia health legislation, we also seek to promote a legislative agenda that will improve access to Nurse-Midwifery care for Virginia women. The VA ACNM provides excellent opportunities for continuing education and social networking for CNM's. Virginia is a large state and in an effort to better serve our members, our Virginia Chapter has developed a Regional Midwife Group (RMG) system. We have divided the state into regions, and each member can choose to be involved in the local RMG. This allows members to meet as a RMG, in order to discuss issues that directly relate to their part of Virginia. It also allows for social and professional networking with other nurse-midwives in a region of the state. When a member joins the VA ACNM, she or he may designate a RMG on the membership form. Members can choose from the following areas: Hampton Roads, Harrisonburg-Charlottesville, Northern Virginia, Richmond, and Southwest Virginia. That's why the philosophy of nurse-midwifery care "focuses on the needs of the individual and family for physical care, emotional and social support and active involvement of significant others according to cultural values and personal preferences." Midwives listen to women, and always provide the information you need to make informed and educated decisions about your healthcare. But, like any provider, not all midwives are the same, and you should decide which type of midwife is right for you. Not all midwives are alike, and not every woman is a candidate for midwifery care. Because standards for the education and practice of midwifery might vary, ACNM urges consumers to carefully evaluate credentials. Why should I choose a midwife who is certified?
